EXPLAINED Ergonomics
is the study of the physical relationship between man / women and his /her machines. For
many of us it is a very subjective thing, yet most ergonomic decisions are made for us by
others, a chair which is difficult to adjust due to complicated controls, hand tool grips
which are difficult to use, confusing buttons on a VCR's etc. etc.
At LEDADESK, we take a specific interest in
trying to provide working environments which allow the human user irrespective of their
physical size, machines (computer equipment) they use and work tasks they perform to
achieve a range of good working postures to reduce physical discomfort.
Getting it right makes good sense for not
only the staff members but also the organization.
As Ergonomics is not an exact science, wide
interpretations exist for what needs to be done to create a 'good' working environment.
Help however is now to hand in the form of new ISO standards on ergonomics in the office
ISO 9241-5 1999. This standard will be helpful to organizations and specifiers to gain a
better understanding of the issues involved and ergonomic solutions to be considered.
